Unless you have been stuck under a rock somewhere for the last seven weeks, you will have noticed that Great Britain has become slightly obsessed with a particular television show that features a big tent, a group of talented competitors, and one hell of a lot of baking powder.
We are, of course, referring to the The Great British Bake Off, a program which attracted its highest ever rating figures recently as 10.3 million viewers tuned in.
Since it first aired in 2010, the show has continued to gain new followers to the extent that it now attracts a bigger British audience than the English football squad; England’s match against Norway earlier this month peaked at just 5.5 million viewers, a pathetic figure when compared to the Bake Off’s peak of 9.1 million.
So what is it about the show that the country loves so much, and why should we care?
It seems that even people who have no interest whatsoever in the world of baking are immeasurably passionate about what on the surface seems to be just a sweet-natured show about making cakes.
Everywhere you look you either see an image of either Mary Berry’s delight with a contestant’s bread loaf or a contestant’s devastation over a cake with the dreaded “soggy bottom”.
If you are in the catering business then this bulldozer of a television show can be a great gift for your profit margins if you are willing to use it to your advantage.
With the right catering equipment, menu, and passion you can start making a lot of extra money from the thousands of Bake Off fanatics across the country.
Here are just a few of the way that you can benefit from the country’s latest craze:
Get the bunting out...
GBBO is one of the most patriotic programs on the box; it is a celebration of quintessentially British baking. Not only is it about baking food to perfection, but the program always features a back story of every dish and where it has come from which gives viewers an opportunity to reminisce about times that we feel affection for despite having never lived in them.
You too can recreate this style in your coffee shop. Decorating the walls with some simple bunting looks fun and will be recognised by Bake Off fans as a nod to the show. If you are thinking about keeping the theme in the long-run (not just for a temporary event) then you should decorate the walls in pastel colours.
The crockery used in the tent–and not to mention most of Mary Berry’s outfits – is usually pastel pinks, blues, and greens. You too can use these colours in your coffee shop and you can also incorporate them into table cloths and napkins.
Hold a Competition
Another way to pull in customers and raise awareness of your company is to hold a competition. Your contestants might be given a bake off challenge – you might want to tell them what kind of food they have to make, - and they will bring in their own ingredients to bake in your outlet. Alternatively, you could make a simpler version where contestants decorate cakes.
If you would rather hold a raffle where people can win cakes / ingredients / a bake off book or anything else then this is another viable option.
Arrange your menu
Arrange your menu in accordance with the bake off. Think about all the different bakes that they have done on the show -from princess torte to pies and tarts- that you can replicate for your customers to enjoy. Which of them were the most appealing? How can you mix savoury and sweet so that there are plenty of options?
Remember, if you are going to be selling more muffins, cakes, and sweet treats you will find that there are an increased number of people who want a coffee with their purchase. Coffee and crumpets or coffee with a nice cake will be a popular option so make sure that your commercial coffee machines are up to date and in working order.
The same goes for all of your catering equipment. If you are serious about getting the most of your cafe, you need to make sure that you have all the necessary cafe equipment in the first place.
